The Fast Guide to Getting a Tauntaun in SWTOR

August 12, 2013

Tauntaun mounts have arrived to SWTOR!

We’ve all been waiting for animal mounts in SWTOR, and Bioware delivered Tauntauns to us this last update, Update 2.3. I love the way they are able to be obtained too, as it benefits the Subscriber!

In getting my own Tauntaun, I used Dulfy’s guide. I would recommend reading her guide first to understand this post here. In working the nests, I discovered a faster and easier way to do things. Using my method, you can hit 27 nests of 3 taun fawns each in one hour. Since there is about a 20% chance a taun fawn will produce Tauntaun domestication data, of which you need 15 or 20, you will have about 16 at the end of my method, which is enough to buy the Subscriber-only Tauntaun. Hit the jump for the details.

The key to my method is alts. The more alts you have, the better. You only need to be 35+ to get a scaled Wampa when you access the Tauntaun nests. Three alts can run this in an hour, so if you have more, use them!

The trick is to not try for all of the nests. There are six nests total, but three are in a direct line with each other, making it trivial to hit all of them in a short time span. Specifically, you want to go to Clabburn Tundra, which has the following three spots.

After you get here, you want to do the following.

  1. Buy a stack of Tauntaun lures for 49,500 credits.
  2. Hit all three spots on Clabburn in a row, making sure to feed each Taun Fawn, even if you already had success at that nest, as it can happen twice at a nest.
  3. When you have done all three nests, switch instances by going to your map and selecting the bottom right “Hoth (1)” or whatever instance you are already in. Keep track of what instance you started in. This will start a 5 minute cooldown on instance switching.
  4. Hit all three nests again.
  5. Switch instances again. This starts a longer cooldown on instance switching (30 minutes, I believe).
  6. Hit all three nests again.
  7. Switch to a new character and repeat.

Then, just send the Domestication Data to your main and purchase the Tauntaun! Good hunting, have fun!

Heh, I did it like this as well! Only I didn’t go as far as to swap between alts. Doing it only on my main got me enough data pads soon enough already. 🙂

Have not done it yet, but will certainly be trying this method when I do. Thanks!

You can reset the instance cooldown by simply logging out and in again.

How come when im on hoth there is no switch instance button?

That is probably because there are not enough people to create two instances anymore. You might try it again at peak time for your server.
