PvP Talent Build: Shield Tech/Advanced Prototype Hybrid Powertech – 25/14/2
LAST UDPATE: Update 1.2.6
This is a PvP build for the Powertech. It is a hybrid between the Shield Tech and Advanced Prototype specialization trees.
Note: This build was created with the Darth Hater Talent Calculator. The link to view this build is here. The associated Vanguard build is here.
Class: Powertech
Primary Focus: Shield Tech
Secondary Focus: Advanced Prototype
Purpose: PvP
Goal: This build is about movement, interrupts, damage mitigation, and our favorite: Rocket Punch. This build incorporates Jet Charge, while taking both damage mitigation talents for a total of 9% damage mitigation while Ion Gas Cylinder is active. This build uses some shield-activated talents, but does not stack shield-chance itself, due to only being able to shield half of the damage types. Rocket Punch is buffed with a proc-based cooldown-reset, a boost to crit chance and damage, and a boost to direct damage.
All points allocated are the maximum allowed for each ability, unless otherwise noted.
Shield Tech (25)
Combust (2/2) – Flame Burst and Flame Sweep reduce targets’ damage by 4% for 15 seconds. This is a great tool to use after Jet Charging into a fray, and can reduce the incoming damage to a Huttball-carrier by a significant amount.
Intimidation (3/3) – Boosts damage of fire effects by 6%. This is a LOT of our skills, so nice to include, regardless of the build.
Rail Loaders (2/2) – Increases damage of Rail Shot by 6%, which will get buffed again in the Advanced Prototype tree. Very nice, especially since we will use this skill a lot.
Neural Overload (1/1) – Ion Gas Cylinder lowers movement speed of opponents by 50% for 2 seconds. Seeing as this will be applied quite frequently, this is a very useful trick.
Ion Overload (2/2) – Rocket Punch applies Ion Gas Cylinder’s effects to your target, and applies an additional DoT. This is how we get the Rocket Punch -> Rail Shot combo going.
Steely Resolve (3/3) – Increases Aim by 9%. Our main stat, so nice to have a large boost. This is especially good when well-geared.
Shield Vents (2/2) – Shielding an attack has a 50% chance to vent 8 heat (only once per 6 seconds). Also increases shield chance by 2%. This is helpful in our heat management.
No Escape (2/2) – Grapple immobilizes your target for 3 seconds, and Stealth Scan now roots stealthed opponents it reveals for 3 seconds. I love this. As a Sentinel, I know that when things get tough, one of my best escape skills is my short-term stealth. When I see that happen on my Powertech, I know to take notice of how a low-health Sentinel/Marauder is going to make its escape and hit him with that stealth and a Rail Shot.
Supercharged Ion Gas (1/1) – Increase damage dealt by Ion Gas Cylinder by 25% and increases its shock duration by 3 seconds. I always like it when my effects that are going to happen anyway get better.
Ion Screen (2/2) – Further increases damage mitigation in Ion Gas Cylinder by 2%. This is one of the two talents we will take in this build that increases our damage mitigation.
Flame Shield (2/2) – Increases the crit chance of Rocket Punch and Flame Sweep by 30%, and it makes shielding an attack have a 50% chance to reset the cooldown on Rocket Punch, which can only happen every 4.5 seconds. This is where our main damage will come in. We now prioritize Rocket Punch to get as much chance for that effect to proc as possible.
Jet Charge (1/1) – This is a great gap-closer, similar to a Jedi Knight’s Force Leap. It has a minimum range of 10m and a max range of 30m. It interrupts and roots for 3 seconds. It is on a 15 second cooldown.
Flame Surge (2/2) – Increases the crit damage of Rocket Punch and Flame Sweep by 30%. So we now have a 30% increased crit chance AND damage! Very nice.
Advanced Prototype (14)
Prototype Burn Enhancers (2/2) – Increases crit chance of all fire effects by 6%. This is additive to the previous bonus to Flame Sweep from Flame Shield. Yay for more crit chance!
Prototype Electro Surge (2/2) – Reduces the cooldown on Electro Dart by 10 seconds, which is great, as it is our main CC.
Puncture (3/3) – Another one of my favorites, regardless of build, this skill makes Rail Shot ignore 60% of the opponent’s armor. A great skill made better. This is especially nice because of the buff from Rail Loaders in the Shield Tech tree above.
Hot Iron (2/2) – Increases the damage of Flame Burst and Retractable Blade by 6%. We are practically spamming Flame Burst so that is a nice buff to a great skill.
Power Armor (2/2) – The second of the damage mitigation talents, this is a flat decrease of incoming damage by 2%, regardless of build. For only a second-tier talent, this is a nice boost.
Hitman (2/2) – Reduces the cooldown of Quell by 2 seconds, which gives us a 6 second cooldown on a 4 second interrupt. This puts us on par with Sentinels for interrupting power. A very nice skill to have when fighting healers.
Retractable Blade (1/1) – This is a hefty DoT that has ZERO cooldown. It costs the same as Flame Burst (16 heat) and is a nice melee alternative when putting the DoT on. The damage is boosted by the previous talent too, so that makes this all the more attractive.
Pyrotech (2)
Iron Fist (2/2) – Boosts damage on Rocket Punch by 8%. This is the third talent we take that boosts Rocket Punch. A very nice buff too.

This is a wonderful build for pvp (as it was intended for), in all honesty it seems superior to a full tank pvp spec since many of the final talent points spent in shield tech seem useless from a pvp perspective. This spec on the other hand gives you a lot of mobility, survivability, and good dps from what I’ve seen so far on my own bounty hunter. It’s also a GREAT boost to have retractable blade in the mix for that extra damage, and I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to notice this. There is another obvious use for this build aswell: leveling.
Nice spec, im wondering if its great for pve too, and is it still as usable after 1.3?
@Serathas It is not as good since 1.3. They nerfed Flame Surge, as it no longer gives that nice crit to Rocket Punch. I would go full 31-pt. for PvE too. I think this is still pretty viable for PvP, just not as good as it used to be.
@Eric, yes this is a great build to mix in Retractable Blade and the extra survivability from the middle tree in the talent Power Armor. I like this build for leveling too, I started with the tank tree, then went Advanced Prototype, then went Pyrotech finally at the end. I found it to be really useful.
I still use this spec for the “tankiness” with extra damage on top, plus I cannot live without Jet Charge lol.
