Getting thawed for SWTOR!

Early access for Star Wars: The Old Republic starts tomorrow! I don’t know if I will be getting in immediately, since though I ordered the game the day it was available, I did it on my iPhone, and so I did not see the part that said I needed to register my code until sometime in August. Read the fine print, people!

My guild, Southern Cross, has been placed on a PvE West server, Lord Praven. These are some of the same people that were on Vilya in LOTRO, so I already know that they will be extremely helpful and awesome. I am very glad some of them are coming, and we get to keep the same Ventrilo, so we will still be in touch with our kinmates still in LOTRO.

Any readers that were placed on Lord Praven?

A SWTOR Beta Top 4: Things I DON’T Like About The Game

There are so many wonderful features of Star Wars: The Old Republic. I got the immense pleasure of playing the Beta this last weekend, and I want to share some screenshots and opinions. I will be putting out a series of posts with the Top 4s of the many things I got to try, including the classes, the PvP, the systems, and the experience in general.

I have to be honest. I have posted things I love about SWTOR, and I have illustrated that I am clearly looking forward to getting my hands on this game again. However, to be completely fair, I need to at least do one post on things I DON’T like about the game (vs. you know, the 9 posts I did on what I love).

A SWTOR Beta Top 4: Reasons To Have A Ship

Space combat is a fun mini-game. It is definitely a diversion, not necessarily a full-blown flight simulator like X-Wing Alliance or TIE Fighter. Still, it is fun, it gives you something to do while crafting, and it isn’t a bad source of XP.

So the Trooper is the ideal soldier: strong, courageous, and a master of the art of war. However, what happens when your conscience is in conflict with orders? That is the line the Trooper must walk. The Trooper is a really fun class, probably a top contender for my main, depending on how much I get to play him before the Smuggler gets my attention. The versatility of the two advanced classes, Vanguard and Commando (tank/DPS and heals/DPS, respectively), is really desirable.

A SWTOR Beta Top 4: Things To Know About PvP

I played three Warzones that were available to me at level 15ish: Alderaan, Huttball, and Voidstar.

Alderaan was a really interesting Warzone, where tactics and battlefield knowledge will definitely come in handy. You have to control turrets that are constantly firing at either the Republic ship or the Imperial ship. The amount of time you control the objectives will directly influence whether you win.

Huttball is a blast, especially if you like football. It is either incredibly difficult to score or we had a bad group that just wanted to shoot each other, because only one team scored when I played, and only once. You are given a skill to pass the ball which is automatically put on your skillbar. It also remains there even outside of the Warzone, which I thought was interesting, so you can place it on a little-used bar and keybind it.

Voidstar was my favorite. The match lasts a little over 10 minutes, and you play either attacking or defending, switching off immediately after the match ends. You have 5 minutes to access a datacore by breaching two sets of doors. The bombs that you place take a few seconds to do so, and the defenders can disarm them as well. Whoever gets the farthest or completes it in the fastest time wins.
