A SWTOR Beta Top 4: Things To Know About Crew Skills (Crafting)

December 4, 2011 Comments off

There are so many wonderful features of Star Wars: The Old Republic. I got the immense pleasure of playing the Beta this last weekend, and I want to share some screenshots and opinions. I will be putting out a series of posts with the Top 4s of the many things I got to try, including the classes, the PvP, the systems, and the experience in general.

Crafting has always been one of my favorite facets of MMOs. The mod crafting system from Knights of the Old Republic 2 was a brilliant design, incorporating the ability to modify lightsabers, weapons, and armor that the first game had into a system that was in-depth character progression. The difference here is that the classes are not unbalanced when it comes to crafting ability, unlike in KOTOR.

Here it is folks, the number one class I am looking forward to playing. This snappy-talking, lady-wooing, sharp-shooting, space-cowboy is the coolest dude since Han Solo himself walked the silver screen. I will probably eventually roll two of these so I can play both advanced classes. I am very partial to the Gunslinger currently, and I was able to get one to level 18 in the Beta before the server logged me off.

Travel is the bane of player existence in MMOs. When mounts become available, what they cost, and what they look like are all crucial to our enjoyment of the game. Automated travel, while not as customized, is also important in not only the mechanics of getting around, but also the general feel of the game, e.g. horseback in LOTRO, zeppelins in WoW, and now, speederbikes in SWTOR!

The Jedi Knight was one of my first choices to play as my main. I did enjoy it, and it was everything I had hoped for and more. If you enjoyed the sheer power of a Blademaster/Guardian in KOTOR, then you will love the Jedi Knight. It was a highly energetic class with a plethora of options for slicing bad guys.

I think this may be one of the best games I’ve ever played. The character progression, the stories, the class-design, and the PvP are all extraordinary. Everything is pretty polished, and the details are pretty close to being ironed out. I am going to enjoy putting out these posts.
