Expect Excellence

December 19, 2011 1 comment

I have played many games in my lifetime. There have been many dungeon-crawls, many grind-fests, and many hours spent wondering why I was doing what I was doing.

It has all come to an end.

SWTOR has single-handedly given me what I’ve always wanted in an MMO. It has story, zest, interesting systems, and a gun-totin’, wise-crackin’ space cowboy who has a flair for getting in guns blazing and getting out with a smile on his face and bad-guys in smoking piles behind him.

The first thing you need to remember is I like playing characters that remind me of certain parts of me. In other words, I can see myself in that character. My Hunter in LOTRO was a single-minded, goal-oriented killer, just like me (except of course for the “killer” part). My Captain in LOTRO was a lot like me (really more like me) in that he was fond of justice, dignity, and tradition, and he is fiercely loyal to his friends.

My smuggler is fantastic with the ladies, is a great shot, has a hot-rod starship, and is snarky and sarcastic. Just like…wait a minute! That’s not at all like me! I am literally none of those things. I have never shot a gun (though I live in Texas), my car is a boring, practical sedan, I am typically very polite and non-confrontational, and I was completely in the dark about how my wife liked me for a year before I finally asked her out on a date! Greetings from Chipchops or, “Once you pop…”

My name, for all intents and purposes, is inconsequential. You may refer to me, however, as Chipchops. [NOTE FROM EDITOR: Chipchops now goes by Rhekk] My pseudonym, as opposed to my wonderful friends Geldarion and Torvox, is more of a personal nickname rather than my gamer/lore name. Despite that, it serves its purpose as good as any other. Now on to a bit about me. Something you may find of me is that I love words. So to say this is “a bit” is only based on my own standards. Also, to say that I hope you will enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it will probably be inaccurate, but I hope you will enjoy this article regardless. Read more…

Almost there! Guild and server information!

Getting thawed for SWTOR!

Early access for Star Wars: The Old Republic starts tomorrow! I don’t know if I will be getting in immediately, since though I ordered the game the day it was available, I did it on my iPhone, and so I did not see the part that said I needed to register my code until sometime in August. Read the fine print, people!

My guild, Southern Cross, has been placed on a PvE West server, Lord Praven. These are some of the same people that were on Vilya in LOTRO, so I already know that they will be extremely helpful and awesome. I am very glad some of them are coming, and we get to keep the same Ventrilo, so we will still be in touch with our kinmates still in LOTRO.

Any readers that were placed on Lord Praven?

PvP Talent Build: On-The-Run Hybrid Gunslinger – 29/5/7

LAST UPDATE: Update 1.1.5

This is a PvP build for the Gunslinger. This will mainly utilize the Sharpshooter specialization, but also has some balance involved.

This build is mainly conjecture from the perspective of what worked in Beta in PvP. This build will more than likely change, and I will put up more builds as I experiment more. This is just a taste of what is to come.

Note: This build was created with the Darth Hater Talent Calculator. The link to view this build is here. Numbers have been left out of my discussion, as values may change in patches before launch. The idea of each ability is usually more important than the qualitative numbers associated with it.

Class: Gunslinger
Primary Focus: Sharpshooter
Secondary Focus: Balanced between Dirty Fighting and Saboteur
Purpose: PvP
Goal: This build is about getting in cover, making people mad because they keep dying, then when they actually finally come after you, getting the heck out of Dodge to continue your sniping.

LAST UPDATE: Update 1.1.5

All points allocated are the maximum allowed for each ability, unless otherwise noted. Read more…

Beginner’s Guide: The Odd Man Out – Support Classes

December 10, 2011 Comments off

Which one does not belong in the Trinity of kittens?

Most of you now know about the MMO Trinity, which is Tank, Healer, and DPS classes (if you don’t click here, here, and here, respectively)

There is another type of class that has seen very wide use, and that is the class role of Support. Technically, Healers fall under the umbrella of “Support,” but I am going to talk about the classes that aren’t really Tanks, Healers, or DPS, but fall under a special sub-category all of their own.

Support classes are usually good for buffing, debuffing, utility skills like cures, off-healing, and power-healing. My ideal group in LOTRO for example has two Healers (one of which can be a Support class), one Tank, one other Support specifically for that purpose, and two DPS. For easier content, one healer can be swapped out for DPS. But what does a Support class actually bring to the table? Read more…
